first_imgReba Brinkman and a brown trout. The Southern Appalachians has thousands of miles of trout streams. Here are four classic destination rivers that should be on every angler’s must-fish list. ELK RIVERWest Virginia Locals call it “The Lady,” because it’s so fertile. The river starts at Slatyfork, where Big Spring Run and Old Field Fork join, then goes underground for six miles before popping back out at Elk Springs in the form of three cold springs, and heads west toward Charleston. Head for the 4.6-mile stretch from the headwaters to the dries, where the river heads underground. This upper stretch, known as the Slatyfork section, is narrow, rocky, and shallow, but has plenty of cover to keep the river cool in the summer. It’s catch and release, and a stellar wild trout fishery. Expect to find naturally reproducing brown, rainbow, and brook.“The Upper Elk has the largest naturalized population of trout in West Virginia,” guidebook author Beau Beasley says. “It’s catch and release, so you’re not going to find as many conventional anglers in the area because they have to let the fish go.”Since the fish populations have been naturalized, they’re more wary than what you’ll find in stocked West Virginia streams, so bring your A-game.Access: From Slatyfork, take County Route 219-12 north for 0.5 miles to a trailhead servicing the catch and release section of the Elk. Follow the former rail line along the river.NORTH FORK MOORMANSVirginiaThe North Fork Moormans is a tight, rugged trout stream that starts near Skyline Drive inside the Shenandoah National Park and eventually feeds the drinking water reservoir for Charlottesville, before mellowing out into a wider river. The headwaters inside the park offer some of the best native brook fishing in the state.“Some of the largest native brook trout in Virginia are found in the North Fork Moormans. It’s not unusual to pull out a 12 to 14 inch brook with a good, thick body,” says James “Chubby” Damron, vice president of the Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited and author of the forthcoming Fly Fishing Guide to Jefferson Country. “Plus, there are over five miles of stream with public access, so you can camp and fish and head up into the upper parts and never see anyone else.”The section inside Shenandoah National Park is catch and release only. A massive flood in the ‘90s wreaked havoc on the trout populations and habitat, but the headwaters have bounced back.Access: Hike-in only. Park at Blackrock Gap on Skyline Drive at milepost 87 and walk down the North Fork Moormans River Road until you find the stream. SOUTH FORK HOLSTON RIVERTennesseeIf you want big fish, and lots of them, you go to the South Fork Holston, a tailwater stream that’s fed by the bottom of the South Holston Dam, which provides trout-friendly ice-cold water year-round. The river is famous for two things: big wild browns, and the mass hatching of sulphur bugs almost daily from April to November. Show up in the summer, and you’re almost guaranteed to see a massive bug hatch, which means the trout are popping to the top of the river to dine. This tailwater section of the river is home to 5,000 trout per mile, about a quarter of which are wild browns. Most anglers like those odds.“This is one of the classic Southern trout fisheries,” says Fly Fishing Team USA member Josh Stephens. “But even with high fish populations, it’s still fly fishing, which means the South Fork Holston can reward you one day and frustrate you the next.”The South Fork Holston is also a wider river, which will allow you more room to practice casting for distance. For large browns that push the 20-pound size, fish the tailwaters between the dam and Bluff City. This section of the river provides fish that rival anything you’ll find in world-famous Western rivers like the San Juan in New Mexico. Pay attention to the TVA dam generation schedule. If you’re fishing while the TVA is releasing water, you’d better be in a boat. Otherwise, wading is an option.Access: If you’re wading, there’s a walk-in area off of River Bend Road and another just upstream from Emmet Bridge.DAVIDSON RIVERNorth CarolinaThe Davidson could be the most well known trout fishery in North Carolina–it even made Trout Unlimited’s Top 100 Trout Streams list–but for good reason: It’s home to some very large trout.“It’s the only place in Western North Carolina where you can see a 24-inch fish, just laying out in front of you,” says long-time guide Forrest Marshal. “There’s a mile-long stretch around the hatchery where you can stand right beside these massive fish and look them right in the eye.”The river is as clear as moonshine, which allows you to spot the massive trout before you start tempting them with flies, but the transparency works both ways. As a rule, you should assume that any rainbow you spot in the Davidson saw you ten minutes earlier and assessed you as a non-threat. These fish are used to humans and have become so large because of regular feedings from the hatchery. So expect a finicky prey…and crowds. The hatchery stretch of the Davidson will host a dozen anglers even during the week. You can head higher into the Davidson River Gorge or lower towards Avery Creek for more solitude, but expect smaller fish.“Even though the Davidson is crowded, it’s still a unique experience,” Marshal says. “It’s still cool to take a beginner down there, put a fly rod in their hands for the first time, teach them a couple of things, and watch them catch a 20-inch fish.”Access: Park at the Pisgah Forest Fish Hatchery, off FS 475 near Brevard, and follow the trail downstream.School of FishWant to learn how to cast from the best? Enroll in an Orvis Fly Fishing School. Orvis, maker of fine fly rods, began the country’s first fly fishing school in 1966 and quickly became the industry standard for teaching beginners how to fish with flies.“There’s a continuity to the training you find at an Orvis school,” says Orvis instructor Reba Brinkman (see Brinkman’s tips for beginners below). “It’s a proven method of teaching. At Orvis, you learn a foundation that you can take and fish anywhere.”Graduate from a two-day Orvis school, and you even get a diploma. There are only 15 Orvis schools in the country. The Southern Appalachians has four.ORVIS TENNESSEE FLY FISHING SCHOOL SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE Taught at the Hidden Mountain Resorts, you’ll start off at the casting pond and eventually have the chance to land wild trout inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. hiddenmountain.comTHE HOMESTEAD FLY FISHING SCHOOL HOT SPRINGS, VIRGINIA Learn the Orvis methods, then test them out on Cascades Stream, a privately owned trout stream on the Homestead that features 20-foot waterfalls and classic Southern Appalachians fishing.NEMACOLIN WOODLANDS RESORT’S ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL FARMINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA There’s a lot of fishable water nestled inside Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. At Nemacolin’s school, you’ll have the opportunity to fish some of the area’s prettiest streams, including the Youghiogheny River and Beaver Creek.NORTH CAROLINA FLY FISHING SCHOOL AT THE BILTMORE ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA Begin your journey to fly-casting superiority on ponds with the Biltmore in the background, then move on to legendary trout streams like the Davidson and Mills River.Fly School: Get an introduction to fly fishing from Orvis.Start HereThree tips from Reba Brinkman, Orvis-endorsed instructor at the Biltmore Estate and founder of WNC Women on the Fly.1. Casting is the most intimidating part of learning how to fly fish. People think it’s difficult, but if you have the proper training, it’s not hard to learn. It’s really important to build that skill at the beginning.2. Eighty percent of a fish’s diet is sub-surface. I look under rocks at the stream for aquatic bugs, then find the fly in my box that matches it closely in color. Or just use a fly that matches the color of the river bottom.3. Focus on fishing just a few local rivers and master them. Get to know these home waters by making a friend at a fly shop. A local resource can be extremely helpful to learning how to fish and where to fish. last_img read more

Psychiatry Ascribes Empty Names to Clusters of Symptoms

first_img(Visited 19 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Schizophrenia doesn’t exist. People exist with various behaviors, but schizophrenia is an empty label, an expert says.Read Medical Xpress for a brief look into the sausage-making behind psychiatric diagnoses. What do the words schizoaffective disorder, psychosis spectrum syndrome, or delusional disorder mean? The very terms seem to give ontological status to something in patients, but nobody knows what those things are, because they vary from person to person. It’s like applying sticky notes to water waves at the beach. The labels don’t stick, they only apply to gross phenomena, and they provide no understanding either of the cause or the cure. What’s more, the labels can actually make things worse by causing family members or friends to look at patients differently. These are some of the warnings in this article. We’ve seen the problems with the DSM-V “Bible” of diagnosis used by psychiatrists (3/20/14, 5/18/12). Now, Professor Jim van Os from Maastricht University Medical Centre is ready to junk the term “schizophrenia” and some others. For illnesses lumped into the word “psychotic,” he says, the symptoms are too complicated to diagnose or treat with one-size-fits-all categories.Currently, psychotic illness is classified among many categories, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, depression or bipolar disorder with psychotic features, and others, he explains. But categories such as these “do not represent diagnoses of discrete diseases, because these remain unknown; rather, they describe how symptoms can cluster, to allow grouping of patients.”This allows clinicians to say, for example, “You have symptoms of psychosis and mania, and we classify that as schizoaffective disorder.” If your psychotic symptoms disappear we may reclassify it as bipolar disorder. If, on the other hand, your mania symptoms disappear and your psychosis becomes chronic, we may re-diagnose it as schizophrenia.“That is how our classification system works. We don’t know enough to diagnose real diseases, so we use a system of symptom based classification.“Definitions provided in the DSM-V and other manuals often disagree. How precise or helpful is a definition for schizophrenia like “a debilitating neurological disorder”? What psychiatrist really knows what the cause of a cluster of symptoms is, let alone what to do about it? Os notes that “people with this psychosis spectrum syndrome display extreme diversity (heterogeneity), both between and within people, in psychopathology, treatment response, and outcome.”Physician, heal thyself. When you can identify a known physical cause for a known neurological disorder (say, autism or Tourette’s or a concussion), you are a doctor. When you appeal to mystical forces that have names but no scientific rigor, you are acting like a witch doctor. Diagnose yourself first. You are trusting in flawed opinions of people who don’t know everything. Toss out the flawed DSM‘s and go to a Bible-teaching church to learn about the true nature of man from the Creator’s manual of the body and brain.“Mental illness” is a made-up term, like dark matter. It’s a placeholder for ignorance. The only one who understands minds is the Spirit that gave birth to them, the Creator God. If a patient’s brain is perfectly fine, spiritual problems can cause outward symptoms. Repeated choices to tell lies, for instance, can become a hardened habit like any other bad habit that must be overcome consciously with guidance and prayer. Patterns of violent outbursts also require spiritual advice from those who know the Creator’s diagnostic manual, the Bible. Memorization and meditation of appropriate Scriptures can bring healing, sometimes rapidly, sometimes gradually. But telling a patient or his parents that he has schizosophoxymoronia—what good is that? It’s as meaningless as saying he has a bad case of gribbleflix. Patients so labeled receive a latent impression that they are incurable, or that they have an excuse for bad behavior. Give them hope. Take them to the Great Physician. He’s on the prayer line 24 x 7.The Scriptures are filled with comfort and advice for “soul” (psyche) health. Some examples:Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9)“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Jesus, in Matthew 11:28-30)No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. (I Corinthians 10:13)The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward.Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins;Let them not rule over me;Then I will be blameless,And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heartBe acceptable in Your sight,O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:7-14)Those who love your law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble (Psalm 119:165, and the whole psalm). The book of Proverbs is another rich resource for enriching mental and spiritual health. Many cases of so-called “mental illness” are caused by sin, like bitterness, anxiety, anger, selfishness, ungratefulness, guilt and pride. The Bible is filled solutions to these root causes! It doesn’t attach empty labels to clusters of symptoms, but identifies the root problem and the cure. Repentance from sin and faith in Christ, who paid the penalty for everyone’s sins and rose from the dead, is the open door to the Great Physician’s office. The narrow doorway requires dropping one’s baggage and coming sincerely by faith. It leads the suffering sinner to forgiveness and a life of hope and healing. “Burdens are lifted at Calvary,” one hymn says. The hope of eternal life in Christ’s resurrection is a “living hope” that puts the sufferings of this life in context. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2). Peace? Hope? Joy? There’s mental health by definition!Exercise: For those who know their Bibles, how would you assist someone with the following problems? Think of specific Scriptures that would apply. Find out if the person is trusting in Christ before offering help on lesser things.Post-traumatic stress disorderPersistent nightmaresGullibilityBad language habitDefensiveness, lashing back at criticismLazinessFear of trying something new or differentHanging around with bad friendsInsomniaHypochondriaLate habitOverly talkative or overly shyPoor study habitsNegativityClutter habit, or the opposite, extreme orderlinessProlonged grievinglast_img read more

Unity needed to move South Africa forward: Zuma

first_img24 May 2014Humbled but determined to lead the country for another five years, President Jacob Zuma says he will need the backing of a united and cohesive nation to move South Africa forward.Delivering his first address to the nation after being sworn in as President at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Saturday, Zuma said the new administration would promote nation building programmes to help “rebuild the soul of our nation”.This, he said, was because many South Africans still bore the emotional scars caused by decades of apartheid divisions and hatred.“Therefore, the national healing and reconciliation process has to continue. We will work together to promote unity, understanding and tolerance across race and colour lines, as we build a South Africa that truly belongs to all,” he said after taking the oath of the highest office in the land.He said South Africa was a nation that had produced generations of selfless freedom fighters, who had made untold sacrifices so that everyone could live in a country that was free of racial discrimination and oppression.“Today we wish to acknowledge the contribution of every South African to the process of renewal, reconstruction and development of this country in the past 20 years of freedom. It is through your hard work, that we are able to count so many achievements in only 20 years of freedom.”The President opened his inauguration speech by expressing his gratitude.“I am greatly honoured to stand before you today, to accept the mandate bestowed upon us by millions of our people … I accept this responsibility and privilege with great humility, given the history of our country and where we come from as a nation.”He reminded the nation that this year marked 20 years of freedom and 20 years since Nelson Mandela had taken the same oath in the same amphitheatre – since renamed after Mandela, who died in December last year.Zuma said a lot of progress had been made in the country since democracy, although challenges remained. “We will strive to build a caring society and to be an administration that will serve our people with courtesy, ubuntu and efficiency.”After the formal ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre, Zuma proceeded to the Southern Lawns to greet those who had gathered to witness the occasion. He thanked the more than 20 000-strong crowd for casting their votes during the general elections two weeks ago, and assured them that the government would work hard to deliver on its promises over the next five years.“As government we are determined to do what we have promised to do. This is your government, and we urge everybody to work with us. If we are together, we are stronger to deliver on what we have promised,” he said.Source: read more

Billy Price counts on his strength Ohio State football counts on him

OSU redshirt junior guard Billy Price celebrates with coach Urban Meyer after the 2014 national championship victory.Credit: Lantern File PhotoThe last time Ohio State and coach Urban Meyer had three starters to replace on the offensive line, the 2014 Buckeyes experienced excruciating growing pains.Redshirt junior Billy Price was one of those linemates who struggled early on.In his first game against Navy in 2014, Price was taken aback by the speed of the game, which is something he struggled with early in his redshirt freshman season.Price said he vividly remembered when OSU surrendered six sacks in the fourth quarter in an early season loss to Virginia Tech. Lessons from those first two games are being passed on to the new group of “Slobs” in 2016.“One of the biggest things when I played Virginia Tech is things start flying so fast, and if you can’t get control of the chaos and situation early, one thing leads to another,” Price said. “I’ve been there, and the biggest thing is stay calm.”None of the national champion offensive line members improved more from game one to game 15 than Price. He earned a second-team freshman All-America honors in 2014. To follow that up, he started all 13 games last season at right guard rather than left guard, being named third-team all-Big Ten.At season’s end, Price still saw plenty of room for improvement.Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa has been working with Price since the spring on pass-blocking technique and playing to the offensive scheme. The third-year starter from Austintown-Fitch High School in Ohio, said that one subtle change in his technique has made the world of difference and has made him a more confident player.Already listed at 6-foot-4, 315 pounds, Price said that it’s nice at times for him to rely on his strength against tough opponents. On Sunday, the team took a vote on who should join captains along with redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett, junior linebacker Raekwon McMillan and redshirt senior center Pat Elflein as the face of the program. The rest of the Buckeyes made it clear that they believe they can rely on Price’s strength and leadership.Price who was one of four players selected as a team captain to represent the Scarlet and Gray.“Huge honor,” Price said. “You’re a part of a legacy here at Ohio State to be a captain. There are very few captains and to be a part of that is just an honor.”Price has started 28 games for OSU in his career. He and Elflein are the only two members remaining from an offensive line that led the way for 264.4 rushing yards per game in 2014 and 245.2 per game in 2015. Those two will be counted on by Meyer and staff to lead a young batch of Buckeyes back to being the brawn of the offense.Though Price is a poster boy for the Buckeyes, he said that there shouldn’t be any doubt who is the true leader of the offensive line.“First and foremost, this is Pat (Elflein)’s offensive line,” Price said. “I don’t want there to ever be a question about that.”True freshman Michael Jordan will likely be stepping into Price’s role from 2014 as a first-year eligible starter on the offensive line. Price has spoken to Jordan on multiple occasions, telling him to take care of school and control the speed of the game. While Elflein was recovering from minor shoulder surgery, he counted on his right-hand man to mentor Jordan and other freshmen inside the unit and develop a camaraderie that was present on the 2014 offense.“I haven’t been in here all summer, so he has kind of taken that role when I’m not in there,” Elflein said. “There’s not a problem having two leaders on the offensive line.” read more

Beckham predicts World Cup finalists
