The Library of Congress announced today that it will award to Harvard President Drew Faust the John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity. The $1 million international prize recognizes individuals whose scholarship in the humanities and social sciences has shaped public affairs and civil society, highlighting researchers who have had a major impact on social and political issues through work conveyed beyond the academic community.“The Library of Congress is thrilled to recognize Drew Gilpin Faust for her extraordinary work researching, writing, and teaching about the fabric of American life,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “Through her extensive writing about Southern identity, she has explored themes of deep relevance to our national conversation on race and gender. As the first female president of Harvard University, she has also led one of the most esteemed educational institutions in the world through a period of intense growth and transformation.”Faust will receive the award during a gala ceremony on Sept. 12 in the library’s Great Hall.A prolific scholar and historian of the Civil War and the American South, Faust has written six books, including the Bancroft Prize-winning “This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War.” She has been named in the Forbes list of “100 Most Powerful Women,” and the National Endowment for the Humanities selected her in 2011 to give the Jefferson Lecture. She holds honorary doctorates from Bowdoin College, Peking University, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Princeton University, the University of Oxford, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Boston College. On July 1, Faust steps down as Harvard president following more than a decade of transformative leadership. Since her presidency began in 2007, she has fostered “One Harvard,” an academic and operational collaboration among Harvard College and the University’s graduate and professional Schools; opened Harvard’s community to new and diverse populations; advanced the University’s educational mission in the arts, sciences, engineering, and the humanities; placed new emphasis on innovation in learning and interdisciplinary programs; expanded the institution’s global footprint; and modernized governance and administrative structures.“I am deeply honored to receive the Kluge Prize and would like to thank the Library of Congress for this recognition and for the vital mission it pursues on behalf of our nation,” said Faust. “The humanities and social sciences have never been more important to our understanding of society and the increasingly connected world we inhabit. They allow us to see the world through the eyes of others, to understand the common hopes and aspirations we share, to cultivate judgment and discernment, and to identify and pursue the questions that must animate our pursuit of a better future.”Faust was selected from a short list of finalists following a nomination process engaging scholars and leaders from around the world, and a subsequent three-stage review by experts inside and outside the library. Administered by the Kluge Center in the Library of Congress, the award reflects the center’s mission to “reinvigorate the interconnection between thought and action,” bridging the gap between scholarship and policymaking.Recent winners of the prize, which is awarded on a semi-regular basis, include the philosophers Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor in 2015, and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former president of Brazil, in 2012.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad’s estranged daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai on Sunday blamed her eldest sister-in-law Misa Bharti for creating a rift between Ms. Rai and Tej Pratap Yadav and driving a wedge between Tejashwi Yadav and her husband. Also read: Tej Pratap Yadav is a drug addict, dresses up like Radha and Krishna, alleges wife Aishwarya RaiA drama unfolded at the 10, Circular Road residence of former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, where Ms. Rai spoke to the media for the first time in the presence of her parents who rushed to the spot upon receiving her distress call.“I wanted my relationship (with Tej Pratap) to work. Hence, I had been staying here even after my husband filed a divorce petition. Though it is pending, my in-laws have started treating me as if we are already divorced,” Ms. Rai said. She was seated under a shed along with her parents in front of the outhouses situated inside the premises while speaking to reporters.“For the past three months, I have been subjected to ill-treatment here. I was not given food, so every day my meals used to come from my residence. Since Saturday, however, I was being denied access even to the kitchen. A personal staff of my mother-in-law rudely told me that it has been locked and refused to hand over the keys to me,” Ms. Rai said. The estranged daughter-in-law of Rabri Devi said, when she began shooting the entire episode on her mobile phone, the staff tried to snatch it.“I ran and he chased me until I came outside the inner quarters,” said Ms. Rai, based on whose complaint, an official of the ‘Mahila Helpline’ rushed to the spot.Pramila, the Helpline official, told reporters, “Let me first have a detailed conversation with the complainant. Based on that, we would decide the course of action to be taken into the matter.”When asked who were present inside the house while she was being denied food and attempts were made to snatch her phone, Ms. Rai said, “Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti and Tejashwi Yadav.”Asked about their responses to the incident, Ms. Rai went on to say “my mother-in-law simply abdicated her responsibility while Misa Bharti, who has been staying here despite being married for long, went about creating mischief so that her writ runs large within the family.”On RJD heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav’s role, she said, “He has always been helpful. I do not know what happened since yesterday. Whether he was aware or not of what was going on.”“It is Misa Bharti who is trying to drive a wedge between the two brothers,” she added.Ms. Rai had tied the knot with Mr. Tej Pratap in May last year and had maintained a silence even after her husband went to court seeking divorce six months later.“Unfortunately, my father-in-law is not present here. He is the only one who could have sorted things out. It is Misa Bharti who does not want me to succeed in my efforts to save my marriage,” Ms. Rai said.Lalu Prasad is serving sentences in a number of fodder scam cases in Ranchi for more than a year.Ms. Rai’s father Chandrika Rai a several-term MLA currently belonging to the RJD was seen having heated exchanges with the security personnel, who were refusing him entry into the inner quarters.“They are neither meeting us nor picking up the phone. I would have never agreed (for her daughter’s marriage with Tej Pratap) had I known things would come to this shameful pass,” he said.No member of Prasad’s family or any RJD leader close to Lalu Prasad’s family was ready to speak on the matter even as the BJP attacked the former Chief Minister and his kin for having “humiliated such a respectable family.”

Turin (Italy): Cristiano Ronaldo made a mockery of Atletico Madrid’s vaunted defense, and then mocked its coach as well. Ronaldo scored a hat trick against the normally resilient Spanish side to send Juventus into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 3-0 win as the Bianconeri fought back from a two-goal first-leg defeat. The former Real Madrid player outjumped Atletico’s defenders to score a header in each half and then converted a late penalty for his first hat trick since joining Juventus in the summer and just when they needed it most. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football together He celebrated at the final whistle by mimicking the obscene gesture Atletico coach Diego Simeone made after the Spanish side’s second goal in the first leg having the final say against a rival he so often defeated as a Real Madrid player. Simeone was fined 20,000 euros ( 22,500) by UEFA for improper conduct and it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will face a similar punishment. It was Ronaldo’s eighth hat trick in the Champions League, moving him level with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and demonstrating why Juventus paid Real Madrid 112 million euros (then 131.5 million) for the Portugal star who has dominated the competition in recent years. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian Open It was the first time Juventus came back from a two-goal defeat in the first leg. “Maybe that’s why Juventus signed me,” Ronaldo said. “To help it do things that it had never done before. This result is a great push for the future, we’re strong and we showed it.” The 34-year-old Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times, including in four of the last five seasons. Without him, Madrid was eliminated by Ajax last week. However, Ronaldo had only scored one goal in the competition for Juventus until Tuesday. “It would have been strange if Ronaldo’s Champions League season ended with only one goal,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “Juventus signed him for nights like this and tonight he made the difference.” For Atletico, it was more heartache in the competition in the year the final is being held in its Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and more pain caused by Ronaldo. While at Madrid, Ronaldo helped beat Atletico in two Champions League finals. He has also now scored 25 goals against Atletico in his career. “He’s the best in the world,” Simeone said. “We suffered, as happened to them in the first leg. They’re through and that’s right. They deserved it … Maybe I didn’t manage to transmit to my players what we needed.” Juventus thought it had taken the lead less than three minutes into the game but VAR confirmed that Ronaldo had fouled Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak before Giorgio Chiellini fired in the rebound. Italy forward Federico Bernardeschi was handed a start instead of Paulo Dybala for Juventus, and he responded by putting in a cross from the left for Ronaldo to head in at the far post in the 27th minute. Bernardeschi also had several chances to extend Juve’s lead notably with an audacious overhead kick in the 35th minute which flew narrowly over. Ronaldo went close again shortly before halftime when he again outjumped everyone but headed Leonardo Spinazzola’s cross wide of the right post. Ronaldo did get the second goal three minutes after the break. Joao Cancelo put in a cross from the right and although Oblak clawed Ronaldo’s header out from under his crossbar, goal-line technology confirmed the ball had crossed the line. Juventus went all out attack and got the decisive third goal four minutes from time. Bernardeschi was nudged over in the penalty area and Ronaldo converted the resulting spot kick to send the home fans wild. In another fixture, Manchester City humiliated Schalke 7-0 to win the Champions League knockout stage tie 10-2 on aggregate and claim a berth in the quarterfinals. Sergio “Kun” Agüero had a brace for the hosts at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium late on Tuesday. Already leading 3-2 after the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, City dominated from the start of the contest and virtually all of the action was in front of visiting goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann. Schalke coach Dominico Tedesco fielded an attack-oriented side, but they struggled to find any gaps in the City defence and left themselves vulnerable. City threatened in the 13th minute, when Kyle Walker’s deep pass found Raheem Sterling, who advanced toward the goal and left the ball for Agüero, whose strike hit the post. Twenty minutes later, City’s Bernardo Silva went down in the area after being brushed by defender Jeffrey Bruma and referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot. Though the penalty looked soft, Turpin felt no need to consult VAR and Agüero coolly converted in the 35th minute to give City a two-goal overall lead. The Argentine international needed just three minutes to get his second of the night, taking a pass from Sterling and slipping the ball under Fährmann. With Schalke forced to press forward, City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko got the ball to a wide-open Leroy Sane and the German scored against his former club to make it 3-0 on the night and a daunting 6-2 overall in the 42nd minute. City, despite the more-than-comfortable lead, did not let up in the second half and scored twice in the opening 10 minutes after the re-start. The first, by Sane, was disallowed for an offside. Sterling’s goal in the 56th minute looked set to suffer the same fate until VAR confirmed that all of the attacking players were onside. Even as City slowed the pace, the nightmare continued for Schalke. Bernardo Silva scored from inside the box in the 71st minute, seven minutes before Phil Foden made it 6-0 (9-2) with a great assist from Sane. Gabriel Jesus delivered the final blow with six minutes left. City, the Premier League holders, are headed to the Champions League quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

Jibing at the Opposition, he said all the leaders in the poll fray, despite fielding a small numbwer of candidates are dreaming of becoming prime minister. The PM later tweeted that he was “grateful for the warmth and affection” shown by the people of Kashi. As chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ rent the air, the PM’s cavalcade traversed through Assi Ghat, Bhadaini, Sonarpura, Madanpura, Jangambadi, Godowlia before concluding at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, where he performed the evening aarti. Modi began the roadshow by garlanding the statue of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya outside the Banaras Hindu University. He was accompanied by BJP chief Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other top alliance leaders.

Explore further (Phys.org) — Researchers working in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda have filmed gorillas dismantling snares set by poachers to catch smaller game. Previously, anecdotal evidence had suggested that silverback gorillas had been seen dismantling snares. In this instance it was two young blackback, mountain gorillas that were involved. The team, part of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Center, filmed first a silverback motioning towards the snare. Next, two young male blackbacks arrived on the scene, surveyed the situation, then proceeded to take apart the snare, avoiding being caught in it in the process.
