We have been watching them for a few years now.“They fit all the right requirements and criteria in terms of quality and keeping an English core which is important.“Ole likes them but it would be difficult to get them both at the same time. We will have to wait and see what happens.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Thursday night, the record-setting Golden State Warriors avoided playoff elimination, taking Game 5 of the Western Conference finals from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Reigning MVP Steph Curry had 31 points on 9-of-20 shooting, but questions remain about whether, after suffering a knee injury early in the playoffs, this is the same Curry who laid waste to the league throughout the season and if he can finish digging the Warriors out of a 3-1 series hole.Curry has shot 35 percent from three in eight games since first being injured, far below his regular-season average of 45 percent. Here’s a breakdown of his 3-point shooting relative to the quality of shots (as divined by the NBA’s player-tracking data) he’s taken throughout the season: Compared with his regular-season showing, post-injury Curry has maintained a high volume of shots with comparable shot quality: He’s taken 10.6 3-point attempts per game with average expected value per shot of .97 points, versus. 11.2 and .98 during the regular season.Relative to expectation, however, Curry has been mortal. He isn’t shooting “badly” by NBA standards, but he has been awful by his own. Curry averaged a flabbergasting .38 points above expectation per 3-point attempt in the regular season, but he’s averaged just .08 points per shot above expectation post-injury. Previously, his worst eight-game stretch was .09 and came from Dec. 11 to Jan. 2.The average 3-pointer taken by a Curry teammate this year had an expected value of 1.1 points, and the Warriors shot .09 better than expectation on them. In other words, since returning from injury, Curry has been chucking like his MVP self but has been connecting like any old Warrior. On the one hand, it is probably good news for the Warriors that Curry appears to be getting his usual looks at his usual frequency since his return. On the other hand, any evidence that Curry isn’t really himself is bad news, because the Warriors are in desperate need of some flabbergasting performances if they hope to repeat.
OSU redshirt junior guard Billy Price celebrates with coach Urban Meyer after the 2014 national championship victory.Credit: Lantern File PhotoThe last time Ohio State and coach Urban Meyer had three starters to replace on the offensive line, the 2014 Buckeyes experienced excruciating growing pains.Redshirt junior Billy Price was one of those linemates who struggled early on.In his first game against Navy in 2014, Price was taken aback by the speed of the game, which is something he struggled with early in his redshirt freshman season.Price said he vividly remembered when OSU surrendered six sacks in the fourth quarter in an early season loss to Virginia Tech. Lessons from those first two games are being passed on to the new group of “Slobs” in 2016.“One of the biggest things when I played Virginia Tech is things start flying so fast, and if you can’t get control of the chaos and situation early, one thing leads to another,” Price said. “I’ve been there, and the biggest thing is stay calm.”None of the national champion offensive line members improved more from game one to game 15 than Price. He earned a second-team freshman All-America honors in 2014. To follow that up, he started all 13 games last season at right guard rather than left guard, being named third-team all-Big Ten.At season’s end, Price still saw plenty of room for improvement.Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa has been working with Price since the spring on pass-blocking technique and playing to the offensive scheme. The third-year starter from Austintown-Fitch High School in Ohio, said that one subtle change in his technique has made the world of difference and has made him a more confident player.Already listed at 6-foot-4, 315 pounds, Price said that it’s nice at times for him to rely on his strength against tough opponents. On Sunday, the team took a vote on who should join captains along with redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett, junior linebacker Raekwon McMillan and redshirt senior center Pat Elflein as the face of the program. The rest of the Buckeyes made it clear that they believe they can rely on Price’s strength and leadership.Price who was one of four players selected as a team captain to represent the Scarlet and Gray.“Huge honor,” Price said. “You’re a part of a legacy here at Ohio State to be a captain. There are very few captains and to be a part of that is just an honor.”Price has started 28 games for OSU in his career. He and Elflein are the only two members remaining from an offensive line that led the way for 264.4 rushing yards per game in 2014 and 245.2 per game in 2015. Those two will be counted on by Meyer and staff to lead a young batch of Buckeyes back to being the brawn of the offense.Though Price is a poster boy for the Buckeyes, he said that there shouldn’t be any doubt who is the true leader of the offensive line.“First and foremost, this is Pat (Elflein)’s offensive line,” Price said. “I don’t want there to ever be a question about that.”True freshman Michael Jordan will likely be stepping into Price’s role from 2014 as a first-year eligible starter on the offensive line. Price has spoken to Jordan on multiple occasions, telling him to take care of school and control the speed of the game. While Elflein was recovering from minor shoulder surgery, he counted on his right-hand man to mentor Jordan and other freshmen inside the unit and develop a camaraderie that was present on the 2014 offense.“I haven’t been in here all summer, so he has kind of taken that role when I’m not in there,” Elflein said. “There’s not a problem having two leaders on the offensive line.”
Playing in a rotation alongside three of the top 35 scorers in school history and three players who have won a combined 10 Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards this season, it can be easy to overlook what Ohio State senior center Dallas Lauderdale can bring to the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. But there was Lauderdale, fresh off playing just nine and seven minutes in the Buckeyes’ past two games, respectively, jump-starting OSU’s offense in the opening moments of the Buckeyes’ 70-48 win against Iowa on Wednesday. After committing a turnover on OSU’s opening possession, the senior from Solon, Ohio, bounced back with a pair of dunks on the Buckeyes’ following two possessions, giving OSU a 4-0 lead in the process. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said it would be easy to forget about Lauderdale when faced with the talent that the OSU roster possesses. “They run their plays for everybody else, but he scores as a byproduct of so much other offensive talent and the fact that we were having trouble guarding those guys,” McCaffery said. “That’s how he hurts you. He hurts you with blocked shots. He hurts with his physical presence and rebounding. And then he hurts you when he hides around the basket and catches and dunks. It wasn’t like they were going to him.” OSU senior guard David Lighty credited Lauderdale’s quick start — on both ends of the floor — as a reason for the Buckeyes’ 22-point victory. “That gave us a big lift. I mean, he’s our key guy in the middle, especially on the defensive end,” Lighty said. “Him coming in and rebounding and getting easy buckets and holding down the paint for us in the middle is something that pretty much got us all started. It’s probably why we all played great defense today.” Playing 14 minutes Wednesday, the most he’s played since Jan. 4, Lauderdale scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, grabbed two rebounds and blocked one shot. Lauderdale’s nine points pushed his career scoring total to 508 points. On one particular sequence early in the second half, Lauderdale showcased his value to the Buckeyes as he blocked a shot out of bounds, contested a missed 3-point attempt and finished with a dunk on the other end of the court, stretching the OSU lead to 47-25. Despite Lauderdale’s playing time being decreased by an average of more than six minutes per game this season, OSU coach Thad Matta said the Buckeyes will continue to rely on Lauderdale as they enter the heart of Big Ten play. “Defensively, to start the game, he was as good as he’s ever been just with his energy and his movement and that sort of thing,” Matta said. “That’s the level we need him at.”
David Beckham is backing both England and Argentina to reach the final of the World Cup at RussiaThe closest the Three Lions have come to winning the World Cup since their 1966 triumph on home soil came in 1990, where they lost to West Germany in a penalty shoot-out in Italy at the semi-final stage. While Argentina have not won the tournament in 32 years and came narrowly close to ending that wait in the 2014 World Cup, where they lost 1-0 to champions Germany in the final.“I think obviously my choice would be England to win the competition, but that’s me being biased and passionate about my country,” said Beckham, according to the BBC.Crouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United. The former Real Madrid midfielder is pleased to see England get off to a promising start in their campaign after they defeated Tunisia 2-1 in their opening game of Group G.“I’m very happy that we won the first game in the group,” added Beckham.“England is a very young team, they don’t have a lot of experience yet and the journey of the World Cup will become harder and harder because there are many good teams in the tournament.”
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says Real Madrid are not the only big club that is interested in signing Nabil Fekir. The 24-year-old France attacker who was jubilant over coming close to signing a deal with Liverpool before the World Cup began, had the move crashed when Lyon declared they had pulled out of a proposed deal.Fakir’s agent, though, has since indicated a transfer could yet be completed, while new Real Madrid head coach Julen Lopetegui is reportedly interested in taking him to the Santiago Bernabeu.Speaking to RT France via FourFourTwo via Fou, Aulas said: “It was expected, at some point, that he could leave for Liverpool.Report: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…“I gave the green light, but things did not happen because they took too long.“Nabil is an exceptional player. The fact that things did not come to fruition with Liverpool aroused the interest of many clubs, not just Real Madrid and their new coach.“Everything is possible. My goal is to make him stay. I hope he will stay, but if he absolutely wants to leave, we will try to find the biggest club in terms of efficiency and size.”Fekir has come off the bench in France’s two World Cup games so far and will be hoping to start their final Group C game against Denmark on Tuesday.
Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is “happy” to see Cristiano Ronaldo open his goalscoring account for the club after netting a brace in Sunday’s 2-1 win over SassuoloAfter three games without a goal to his name, Ronaldo answered his critics on Sunday with both of Juventus’ goals to hand the Old Lady all three points. It means that Juventus are the only side to have won all four of their Serie A fixtures. And Allegri was certain that it was only a matter of time before Ronaldo would score for the Bianconeri.“He came very close in his first three games,” Allegri told the club website.Vidic: “Ronaldo is the most professional footballer I’ve seen” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Nemanja Vidic opened up on how a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s professionalism left him stunned at Manchester United.“I think he rushed a couple of chances today – it looked like he was absolutely desperate to score.“Football has a way of evening things out and that was the story of the first goal, with the ball bouncing off the post and sitting up for him.
